As a young boy, I could almost predict the precise moment when the Jake brake dump valve of a fully laden rig would sound its characteristic deceleration flutter. As it slowed, I would excitedly petition the driver to blast the rig’s air horn. I knew even then that my love for trucks would be an undying one. Today, from my office I oversee a fleet of over one hundred heavy articulated vehicles as they go about their duty at Shipping & General Transport. My dream is my reality. As SGTs Managing Director, I have been relentless in making it my business to know my industry, and to steer my company’s expansion, while still encompassing the values that SGT was built on. We know the enormous value of small beginnings because that is where it all started, from a make-shift container office to thriving seasons of exponential growth in our offerings and our facilities.

We are known for our resolute commitment to service excellence and we live by our motto which sums it up best: ‘Service Is Our Priority’. As a company we have demonstrated our ability to hold steady, to read the wind, and know when to set sail for the horizon.

We have been passionate about what we do for thirty-nine years, and for me, we have only just begun.

Some say that a good plan and a solid foundation are essential for an idea to work. This is true. Though sometimes one must know how to risk well. When I wanted to start my own transport company in 1984, all I had was R1 000,00 in my pocket and a dream. In apartheid South Africa, non-white people struggled to build their dreams. Thinking back, even if I had the best business plan, it would have been hard for anyone to believe that I would realise success. But greater than my R1000,00 was my determination to become a transporter. It was all I needed to take the greatest risk of my life. From a small container turned office in a yard in Germiston, I started operations of Shipping & General Transport.

Thirty-nine years later, SGT is the best risk I took. I am inspired by what we have achieved: end-to-end service offerings, our own depot, a fleet of vehicles and a reputation built on our unyielding commitment to excellence. Under Regan’s leadership, we are continuing to grow beyond my wildest dreams.

It was fortuitous that my first full-time job was for Saftainer & later Roadwing, both transport and logistics companies. I did not plan to work in the transport industry but when I was given the opportunity, it was a path for me to realise my dream of a career in commerce and finance. I could study while learning the ins and outs of the business. I owe much to those first years. It shaped me for an industry which was going to become a very big part of my life. In 2005 I joined the finance department at Shipping & General Transport. This has been one of the greatest challenges and the sweetest delights of my life. I pursued my studies, and I earned my B Com specialising in Financial Management. It was a personal accomplishment for me to manage the processes and financial stability of SGT, as we have met one challenge after another, and realised one dream after another.

I believe that this ability to press in and press on is what our clients appreciate about us. I am excited about what possibilities we have yet to pursue.

How it all began:

In 1984 Daya Moodley started a small landside logistics company, Shipping and General Transport Services in a tiny office, in a container depot south of Johannesburg. It is said ‘Never despise the day of small beginnings.’ Shipping & General Transport Services are a testament to that. We know the enormous value of small beginnings. Today his son, Regan Moodley directs Shipping and General Transport Services from the company’s very own container depot not too far from its humble beginnings. Regan commands a fleet of over 100 heavy commercial vehicles with the same passion and principles which his father founded the company on:

Trustworthiness. Reliability. Perseverance.

What we do

Originally established in 1984, the company set off to provide a local road transportation service to forwarders, importers and exporters at a time that coincided with South Africa’s entry into international containerised transportation. Client requirements and new market inclinations provided opportunities to progress into warehousing and long haulage to and from our country’s flagship Port of Durban and Johannesburg. Our privilege is our presence on the N3 corridor. Today, the company has evolved into a reputable one-call service provider of landside logistic services to amongst others, the South African clearing & forwarding, shipping, mining, energy, manufacturing, import & export markets.
